Milestones- A Time For Reflection

Milestones-A Time For Reflection

There are certain ages that we reach throughout our lives that are considered to be significant. This month, I am turning 50, and although many people often long to hold onto the experiences of earlier times or prefer to not acknowledge these milestones, I am looking at turning 50 as a blessing.

It’s an opportunity to begin this next stage of my life with a wealth of life experiences to carry me forward and the chance to finally begin the next phase of my self discovery and creative journey.

Too often, despite our desires and best intentions, we end up taking different paths than the ones we originally intended to follow, or never really begin to work towards the completion of those projects we always intended to see through.

As we come closer to reaching the milestones in our lives, we often set expectations that by the time we reach a certain age, we should have completed the things on our lists, or had the experiences we always intended to have. We all have things that we want to accomplish but for most of us, we will tend to live our lives never really checking off all those boxes or seeing those things come to fruition.

If I take a look back over the last couple of years, I had a list of a number of projects that I wanted to accomplish by the time I was 50. It was a clear vision of desired achievements but came without a true realistic outline that would keep me committed to the process of how to get there. As a result of this, I started to look at this milestone with a sense of failing myself.

Recently, I began to change my thinking and decided that rather than looking at this milestone as having “failed” by not reaching certain goals, I decided to take the time to reflect on the many experiences I have had in my life and how they have helped guide me to follow the paths that were truly intended for me.

What I discovered is that while there are some unfinished projects and many changes of direction, I have dedicated most of my life to the pursuit of education, the process of developing my talents and passion for music and the arts, and my desire for living the best life I can.

Through my experiences, I realized that many of the things I had devoted my time and energy to in the past were things that did not always fulfil my life or allow me to express my own creative side.

I was invested in the creative visions of other people and I was content to do my part to help them discover their potential. I was happy to see them achieve their own successes, but somewhere along the way, I forgot to take the time to allow myself to see what I was capable of.

It took me years to overcome this and I still struggle with giving myself permission to focus on my own development and to embrace my creative side. I was set back when I looked at the things that I was determined to have accomplished by the time I reached 50, but instead had ended up with a longer list of unchecked opportunities.

I began to realize that a milestone is not an indication of achievements but rather a chance to reflect on the experiences you have had and to celebrate the new opportunities that are ahead of you.

Rather than saying that it’s too late to start new projects, or that we are too old to try something new, we need to let go of people’s expectations and make the time to explore new ideas, try new things and allow ourselves the time to discover what makes us happy.

The projects I have not yet accomplished by the time I reach my milestone are not to be abandoned, but rather embraced and celebrated. We need to live our lives by finding the things that make us joyful and to embrace the opportunities that we always wanted to take.

Celebrate the opportunities as they present themselves to you and enjoy the experiences that you are meant to have along the way. Life is not about the quantity of the things you achieve but rather embracing the process and the joy the results can bring you when you are ready to share.

Reflect on your past experiences because they all make up who you have become.Remember that a milestone is a chance to begin again and to find out what you are truly capable of.
